This wild rollercoaster of a year is finally coming to an end – it’s definitely something to celebrate! But with the second wave of COVID-19 hitting South Africa (and most of the world) pretty hard, it’s important to be safe and responsible with our festivities. One way to do this is to celebrate New Year’s Eve at home this year. Here are some ways to have an awesome quarantine NYE celebration while doing your part to slow the spread:
1. Dress Up
Just because you’re at home this year, it doesn’t mean you can’t dress up as you usually would! If you typically pull out your best outfit for New Year’s Eve, there’s no need to change that this year. Allow yourself to get into the festive vibe and get dressed up – who cares if the only one who sees it is your cat?
2. Host a Virtual Party
If you aren’t celebrating New Year’s with your loved ones in person, do the next best thing and host a virtual celebration. Consider scheduling a time to meet online. Doing the countdown with a group of loved ones could make this New Year’s feel a little less unusual!
3. Play games
Playing games is a great way to have a good time when you’re at home. Be prepared and make sure you’ve got a few on deck for New Year’s Eve. If you’re at home with family for New Year’s, pull out some board games (a classic game of 30 Seconds or Monopoly is always a good idea!) or plan a mini-quiz night. If you’re hosting a Zoom party, there are plenty of games available to play too.
4. Stream a Live Countdown
Since there won’t be any public gatherings for the annual countdown, stream a live countdown in the comfort of your own home. This website allows you to stream a countdown from any time zone. Have it play in the background as you celebrate at home to get into the festive vibe!
5. Make a festive cocktail
We all know that New Year’s Eve is all about the bubbly. But that doesn’t mean you can’t kick it up a notch and make yourself a festive champagne cocktail. If alcohol isn’t your thing, make yourself a fun non-alcoholic ‘mocktail’ instead!
6. Have a movie marathon
If you’re looking to keep things super low-key this year, you can have a relaxing night in and binge a couple of good movies. Light some candles, settle in with some snacks (and maybe a bottle of champagne) and get comfy in your pyjamas for a good ol’ movie marathon to ring in the new year.
7. Have a dance party
You can purchase tickets to virtual New Year’s festivals that are happening around the world. Tomorrowland is hosting a digital NYE event with a line-up including Major Lazer, David Guetta and Diplo. There are other free options such as Rave to the Moon where you can register for free and are encouraged to make a donation to a charity of your choice instead. Alternatively, you can make a playlist yourself and have your own little dance party at home!
8. Decorate for 2021
It wouldn’t be New Year’s Eve without some or other type of glittery decoration. Get yourself in the festive mood with some simple decorations. Some streamers or fairy lights can elevate the mood and make it feel more like a party – even if it’s just a party for one!
9. Spoil yourself with good food
One of the best ways to ring in the new year is with some good food. Whether it be a hearty meal you prepare for yourself or ordering takeouts, spoil yourself with some good food this New Year’s Eve.
10. Write down your goals for 2021
Staying at home means having extra time to reflect on the past year and to plan for the next. Take some time to figure out what goals you’d like to accomplish in the next year, put some pen to paper and manifest! Get ready to have your best year yet.
